Craig cruised the streets of Brooklyn in his new Benz, enjoying the beautiful day. Everyone was outside in the hood, the projects were packed and the fiends were out in force. Everything seemed good, plus Lisa was two months strong in her program and was ready to come home.

Craig cleaned his house of any and every drug and fixed her room up nicely in colors that would uplift her and make her feel happy. He wanted his mother to have a home. Just the thought of it made him smile. He stopped at a florist to pick up an arrangement to welcome her home. When he rang the bell at the front desk, a girl walked out from behind the door with a book in her hand.

"Hi, can I help you?"

"Chrissy!"

Chrissy squinted at Craig, laying her book on the counter. "Hey, what's up? How you doing?"

"I’m good, can’t complain. I haven't seen you in a while."

"Yeah, I know. My life is just a story. I’m trying to finish school so I can join the Army. Where you been, Craig? I haven't seen you around."

"I just been low-key. It’s too much going on in the streets. I’m just trying to live. Can I ask you a question?" Craig leaned in toward her and looked at the history book she had laid on the counter. “Why do you want to go to the Army?"

"I’m tired of being an orphan, Craig. I’m seventeen and I’ve been in five different homes. I would think because I’m smart, pretty and talented people would love me and want me but, the reality is some want a check and others just want to fuckme.”

Craig blinked and stood up straight as Chrissy continued. “I have yet to be in a good home. I’m sick and tired of being fucked with. I’m sick of these motherfuckers touching me. I just want to be where someone loves me.”

“I hear that.” Craig wanted to pull her into a hug, but kept his distance and let her keep talking.

“I’ve been at the same home for the past three years. My foster mother’s never home. She's just in it for the check. She doesn’t care if I have food or clothes on my back. But I’ll take neglect over being raped. She can have my money. That's why I work here."

Craig knew exactly how she felt. Nobody had ever wanted him, either. "Well, I hope the Army works out for you. Think maybe one day we can go to dinner and compare our fucked up life stories?"

Chrissy smiled. "Craig, trust your life is nothing like mines."

"You’re right. My life is much worse."

Chrissy raised one eyebrow. "So, how can I help you today?"

"I’m looking for some roses to symbolize happiness."

"I have something I think you’ll like." Chrissy went to the back and Craig heard the shop door open. He didn’t look around until he felt cold steel poke the back of his head.

"What do you want, Tai?"

"Just hoping to have a little chat with you.
